Hands-On With Skype for Android: No Voice Calls Over 3G Makes Skype A Dull App

A few weeks ago, when Skype started Fring users to the sidewalk and made sure that app could not access the Skype service, many thought, meant that the company soon roll out its own text and video chat application. Today, Skype for Android on the market and offer (drum roll please): calls and chats. No video chat, and no love for each phone are not working on Android 2.1 or higher comes, it does not work on phones Samsung S Galaxy, plus China and Japan have to wait. As disappointing as that is there is more to come.

Let me come back here and say that my first impression is of soft Skype that it is sound in general. Users have access to the same Skype contacts from the desktop application and will be able to merge the contacts with their existing address book. Skype will also see if one of your phone contacts to Skype, and you can select from your address book when merged.

Text chat was not very exciting, but there is not much we can do something new. I started as a one-on-one chat from my office to my phone, open the chat window immediately. However, if you have multiple cats, the software is not as well informed you a few windows. There is a reporting of events in the upper left corner, but no sound or even a remarkable animation to warn you about things happening in another window. At best it is a lecture at a time, stick then. If you do not get into the Skype application and a message, you ping the system tray, at least.

Switching between the cats might be easier as well. Currently the only way I see the tab, then choose from the list there.

Users can call other Skype accounts for free, or if you have a credit or a Skype Unlimited Calling, you can call other Skype mobile or fixed, as seen from the Skype application. The quality of the connection is obvious on the connection and how good your micro-phone from.

We have a test call are Skype to Skype in the office of Wi-Fi, about 40 feet from our router. I called a colleague in his office from my cell phone and it seemed very clear on my end. I was not so clear on his end, but still audible. There was a delay of about 1.5 seconds, but otherwise the call about what we expected.

Then I attempted calls via 3G technology, and that’s where the magic happens. First, Skype is held offline, when I connected 3G. After a bit of violin, I had the connection, then tried to make a call. And that’s when I saw this:

Wi-Fi only in the U.S. I was a little of this shock, because the press release and the Skype blog, I touted 3G and Wi-Fi was calling. Then I scrolled all the way down and finally saw the warning: “” In the U.S. you can make calls over WiFi. “The fact that they understood this information before, without a star for this line:” You can also book cheap ordinary phones from Skype – white over WiFi or 3G, “said Skype, it is necessary to make users less success.

It’s hard not to find this very disappointing. When Apple FaceTime calls only Wi-Fi is sad, but understandable given the experience was that we had with Qik and cunning FaceTime work on 3G networks. But also restrict calls? That does not make much sense. I’ve been using Google Voice over six months and while 3G calls are not always clear, I have never had such a horrible experience, I would not use it. So, what’s wrong with Skype?

Ultimately, I came up with the feeling that Skype has many features for Android, and if I were a heavy user of Skype and regular telephone own plan-to-Skype calls, I would be very happy with this they have given me so far. But I do not think it to attract new users, or they want to switch to using Skype Voice from Google (which offers free calls) or Fring, Google Talk, or any number of similar services / apps. It’s a decent first step, but I’m waiting for something to wow me.
